PLOT JOURNEY: POINT OF NO RETURN

NO TURNING BACK

The story takes off.

There’s no turning back, for them or for us. In The Godfather, Michael sits down at a restaurant in the Bronx, a gun waiting in the restroom. When he walks out, the son who swore he was out belongs to the family forever.

In Little Miss Sunshine, word comes that Olive has made the pageant. No one can stay behind, so everyone goes. The van pulls out, and we’re on the road with them, wherever it leads.

A great Point of No Return is a choice that can’t be undone, a commitment with a cost and a consequence. It’s what keeps readers turning pages and audiences watching, and it’s what gets projects bought, or passed over.

To keep audiences on the edge of their seats, it doesn’t take a bigger explosion. It takes a choice that means something. And that starts with knowing what your story is about.

So we start there. What do you want to say? What must your characters choose? How does it play out through action, feeling and relationship? Is it on the page? How does it become a shot you can feel?

Land it, and your audience will follow your story anywhere. This class shows you how.

What Happens

Learn the same tools used by the creators of Little Miss Sunshine, Beginners, Transparent and scores of other beloved hits. Whether or not you were at Setup, bring the scene where your story turns, and Joan works it live.

In this class

  • Find the choice your story can’t take back
  • Make your audience care what happens next
  • Clarify the plot event that sets your journey in motion
  • Block your plot in a shot
  • See scenes from the class worked live, and leave with your story past the point of no return

Bring Your Work

Joan may choose 1–2 scenes from the class to work on live. Have your Point of No Return scene ready.

Who it's For

Writers, directors, actors, producers, and every artist shaping a story: a feature, a series, a novel, a vertical drama, a commercial, or something new. Open to everyone, and a natural next step after Setup.
